Anxiety Medications

Though everyone suffers from symptoms of stress from time to time, when the issue becomes chronic, prescription anxiety medications may be required to help an individual to overcome some of the symptoms that are holding him or her back from living a normal life. Though these drugs generally aren’t prescribed simply for occasional bouts of stress, disorders and conditions may necessitate these pills – alongside other treatments such as therapy or anxiety management lifestyle changes – in order to help to bring a person’s life back under control.

While some people may take anxiety relief medications over a period of a few months, to help overcome a specific life struggle, others will need to continue their use over many years. This is particularly true among sufferers of conditions such as social anxiety disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.

There are a number of different types of anxiety medications online. There is no single option that works for everyone. Choosing the right one requires the doctor to consider the type of anxiety, its suspected cause, and the symptoms that are associated with it. It typically involves anxiety drugs from one of the following three most common groups.

  • Benzodiazepines – though these drugs are often prescribed by physicians and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration calls them one of the most widely recommended for the treatment of anxiety in the country, they have a downside along with their benefits. Drugs in this group of prescription anxiety medications include lorazepam, diazepam, alprazolam, chlordiazepoxide, and clonazepam, among others. The drawbacks include both mental and physical dependence, but the benefits include the fact that they work much more quickly than other types of anti-anxiety drugs. To avoid problems, these are typically prescribed only on a short term basis.
  • SSRIs – selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors are also very common prescription anxiety medications. They are designed as antidepressants, but will often function among individuals with anxiety disorders to reduce their symptoms. These drugs include, among others, paroxetine, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine, citalopram, and sertraline.
  • Bupirone – also known primarily as an antidepressant, this form of prescription anxiety medications are often prescribed for treatment over the long term. This drug functions in the exact opposite way that SSRIs are believed to work, by decreasing (instead of raising) serotonin levels in the brain.

Those are by far the top 3 types of prescription anti anxiety medication that are currently used in the United States. However, other types of pills are also commonly used, such as beta blockers, which help to keep high blood pressure under control, but that can also help to reduce specific experiences of heightened anxiety.
