Anxiety Disorders Information

Anxiety disorders go far beyond having common feelings of nervousness or apprehension that may be felt before a big event (i.e. giving a speech, job interview, etc.), or when you are faced with a serious and significant situation.  Anxiety becomes a problem when a person experiences frequent major distress that negatively impacts and impairs their day-to-day living.

Individuals who suffer from anxiety disorders often struggle socially. They have a hard time with social interactions, work and school, as well as relationships with family, friends, and other loved ones.  It is not uncommon for a person to have more than one anxiety disorder at a time. These disorders may also occur in conjunction with other medical conditions like depression, substance abuse problems, eating disorders, etc.

Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental health problems that affect people around the world.  It is estimated that one in ten people are currently suffering from anxiety issues, while one in four people will experience problems with anxiety at some point in their life.  These disorders tend to be more prevalent in women, but can occur in both genders and effect adults and children.

There are six primary anxiety disorders that can affect adults and children. They are as follows:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – feeling anxious for no particular reason almost all of the time.
  • Panic Disorder – sudden and acute attack of anxiety that happens with no warning. Also known as panic attacks.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – fear of embarrassing oneself in a social situation. Also known as social phobia.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – anxiety that is linked to and results after a stressful/traumatic life event.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – unnecessary and repetitive superfluous thoughts or behaviors.
  • Specific Phobia – having an intense fear of a specific situation, object, or thing. Examples include fear of flying, heights, spiders, driving, etc.

In addition, children may also experience a seventh disorder known as Separation Anxiety.

Anxiety disorders are often misunderstood and those who suffer from them do not always realize the severity of their problem, or fail to recognize that they need help to overcome their issues.  Each of the above listed disorders is a mental health condition that requires treatment.  The good news is that there are many treatment options available, and once diagnosed, many of the disorders can be managed and even overcome.

If you think that you or someone you love may be suffering from anxiety disorders, talk to your primary care physician and obtain the help that is required, so you can get back to living a happy and healthy life.
